Privacy Policy

Dodeca has no accounts and does not track you. Your questions leave the device for one reason: to be answered.

Applies to Dodeca for iOS  ·  Effective 12 September 2026

The short version

When you ask a question, or tap a word to dig deeper, that text is sent to our server, which forwards it to an AI model provider to generate the answer and streams the answer back. We do not store the text of your questions or answers. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking SDK. Everything you write and highlight is kept on your device and, if you choose, in your own iCloud.

What is sent to our server

The question you type, and the word plus its surrounding sentence when you tap to dig. That is the only user content that leaves the device. It is transmitted over HTTPS to a server we operate and passed to an AI model provider (currently Anthropic) solely to produce the answer. Our server relays the reply; it does not write the text to any database or log.

The provider processes the text under its API terms, which do not use API inputs to train its models. We have no access to any copy it may hold for abuse-prevention purposes, and we cannot read it back.

Please do not put passwords, card numbers, or other secrets into a question. The app has no way to know what is sensitive, and it treats every question the same way.

What we keep

A random device identifier and a document balance. Dodeca has no sign-in, so the app generates a random identifier the first time it runs and stores it in the device's keychain. Our server uses it for one thing: to remember how many documents you have left, including the free ones. Alongside it we keep a ledger of how many tokens each request consumed so the balance can be settled honestly.

The identifier is not derived from your device, your Apple Account, or anything about you, and it is not shared with anyone. It cannot be used to identify you, and we do not attempt to. If you want it and its balance deleted, write to us with the identifier shown in the app's Settings screen (About section) and we will erase the record.

What stays on your device

Your documents, highlights, review cards, and settings. Every answer you receive is saved locally as a document you own. Highlights, the spaced-repetition review deck, and the knowledge map are computed and stored on the device.

Camera. Photographing a page to turn it into a question uses on-device text recognition. The photo is not uploaded; only the recognized text you choose to ask is sent, exactly as if you had typed it.

Microphone and speech recognition. Speaking a question uses Apple's speech recognition. On supported devices this runs entirely on the device. Where on-device recognition is unavailable, iOS may use Apple's servers under Apple's own privacy terms. The resulting text is sent to us only when you send the question.

Widgets and Spotlight. The home-screen widget and system search index read your saved documents on the device. Nothing about them is sent to us.

iCloud

If you are signed in to iCloud, Dodeca backs up your documents to your iCloud Drive so a new device can restore them. This is Apple's storage under your Apple Account. We cannot read it, and turning off iCloud Drive for Dodeca in iOS Settings stops it.

Purchases

Document packs are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never see your card details, name, email address, or Apple Account identifier. When a purchase completes, the app tells our server the transaction identifier so the documents can be added to your balance. That identifier is kept so the same purchase is never credited twice.

Network security

All traffic between the app and our server uses HTTPS. The app allows a plain-HTTP connection for one purpose only: the optional self-hosted mode, in which you point the app at your own Ollama server on your own network. In that mode your questions go to that server and nowhere else, and we receive nothing.

Self-hosted mode

If you switch the AI engine to self-hosted in Settings, the app sends your questions and the words you tap to the server address you entered, using the models you chose. Our server is not involved, no balance is used, and nothing about the exchange reaches us. Securing that server and its network is up to you.

Children

Dodeca is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Because there is no account, we hold no personal data about anyone of any age beyond the random identifier described above.

Your rights

Privacy laws give you rights to access, correct, or delete personal data held about you. The only record we hold is the device identifier and its balance ledger, which contains no personal information. On request we will delete it, or send you a copy of it, within a few days. Deleting it also forfeits any remaining balance, so we will confirm before we do.

Changes

If a future version changes what the app does with data, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the effective date above will change. We will not ship a version that starts storing your questions quietly.
